Mount'n Memories TaxidermyField Care Tips

Mammals

1. Keep your animals cool and out of the sun/heat.

2. Do not drag your animal any more than you have to. Dragging your animal can cause hair to fall out and lessen the quality of your mount. Put it on your four-wheeler or drag it on a sled to avoid damage.

3. Do not make any cuts in front of the front legs.

4. If you are not sure on how to properly skin your game animal, take it to the taxidermist and let a professional do it for you.

For animals that are thin skinned, such as wild canines and squirrels, it is important to get them to the taxidermist as soon as possible. If you cannot get them there within a few hours, freeze the animal whole until you can get it to them.

Fish

1. I highly recommend  that you carry a bag of borax with you, and as soon as you catch the fish you want to have mounted, thoroughly coat the entire fish and this helps to lock in the color of your fish.

2. Do not freeze your fish in newspaper. Wrap it in a wet towel and then freeze it. This will help protect the fins when the towel hardens.

3. If you are doing a replica mount, make sure that you take a length and girth measurement as well as provide a photo of the fish.

Birds

1. Freeze the bird in a position that puts the birds feathers in as little of a bind as possible.

2. For small birds such as grouse and pheasant, you can actually slide the bird into a pair of panty hose head first and that holds the feathers in place quite nicely.

3. Do not pull on the feathers for any reason at all. A feather that looks like its going to fall out may just be out of place.
